세계 첫 민간 상업용 우주왕복선 ‘스페이스십 투’ 공개

버진 그룹 회장인 영국의 억만장자 리차드 브랜슨이 ‘스페이스십 투(Spaceship Two)’를 공개했습니다.조종사 2명과 승객 6명을 태우고 지구 대기권을 벗어나 준궤도를 비행하도록 설계된 첫 상업용 우주선입니다.

#인터뷰[리차드 브랜슨]“저는 수년 동안 제 힘으로 우주에 가겠다는 꿈을 꿔왔습니다. 실제로 우리만의 우주선을 타고 우주로 갈 수 있게 된다는 것은 도저히 믿기지 않는 일이었죠.”총 비행시간은 2시간 30분이며, 비용은 1인당 2억3000만 원 정도입니다. 버진 그룹에 따르면 현재 우주 관광 티켓 300장이 팔렸다고 합니다.최초의 민간 상업용 우주선인 만큼, 안전에 대한 우려가 적지 않습니다. 하지만 브랜슨 회장은 그들의 기술이 나사(미국항공우주국)보다 더 참신하다며, 스페이스십 투의 안전성을 강조했습니다.

#인터뷰[리차드 브랜슨]“우리가 가진 강점은 기술이 나사에 비해 50년 정도 더 참신하다는 겁니다. 엔지니어인 버트는 패더링 매커니즘(feathering mechanism)의 아이디어를 내놓았습니다. (이 아이디어 덕분에) 우주선이 지구 대기권으로 되돌아왔을 때, 승객들은 엄청난 열기를 견디지 않아도 됩니다.”스페이스십 투의 상업 비행은 2011년 시작될 예정이며, 리차드 브랜슨 부부와 우주선을 설계한 엔지니어 버트 루탄이 첫 승객으로 탑승하게 됩니다.

Mojave, California -- a speck of a town between Las Vegas and Los Angeles.
It's here, literally in the middle of nowhere, that billionaire Sir Richard Branson is unveiling the craft he hopes will rocket into a thriving business.
His Spaceship Two -- is designed to carry six paying passengers and two pilots soaring into Earth's orbit.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) SIR RICHARD BRANSON SAYING:"Well, it's certainly a dream come true. I keep thinking I'm going to wake up tomorrow morning, and that was the most incredible dream. For many years, I sort of have dreamed about the idea of actually going into space myself and to actually be able to go on our very own spacecraft is certainly almost too unbelievable to be true."
Branson's engineers are planning tests for Spaceship Two next year -- with commercial flights starting as early as 2011.
Flights will last around two and a half hours -- that is, for those with 200-thousand dollars to spare.
Branson claims the experience will be completely safe, and shrugged off comparisons to NASA.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) SIR RICHARD BRANSON SAYING:"The advantage we have over NASA is that our technology is 50 years younger than theirs. - EDIT - Burt came up with this idea of a feathering mechanism, so when you are coming back into Earth's atmosphere, you don't have this enormous build-up of heat. The whole spaceship turns into this giant shuttlecock and actually shuttlecock's back into Earth's atmosphere."
Branson plans to be on the first flight.
Where to after that?
Branson hopes the technology can eventually be used for commercial air travel -- possibly a two hour flight from Los Angeles to Australia.
